SAP on iPad: It’s All Going Mobile

The iPad apps on display at SAPPHIRE NOW enable users to access SAP Business Suite 7, SAP BusinessObjects Crystal Reports 2008, enhancements for SAP Business ByDesign 2.5, and more. Join SAP.info as we tour the event floor!

Accessing SAP with iPad: HPI’s dunning app in action (photo: Frank Völkel)

The way the business world accesses its data is undergoing a phase of rapid upheaval. One tour of the SAPPHIRE NOW exhibition areas and it’s clear that many companies have not been able to withstand the magnetism of the iPad. Not only is nearly every stand giving away one of Apple’s new tablet computers at least once a day; a significant number of presenters are using the handy touchscreen device to access a wide variety of SAP software. An array of such apps are already available for iPad – such as the Hasso Plattner Institute’s dunning app for SAP Business ByDesign 2.5, displayed above – or are in the final stages of testing. With HPI’s app, for example, users can display open customer invoices in Google Maps based on their geographic location. In a demonstration at SAPPHIRE NOW, this data was loaded in real time from SAP Business ByDesign.

Even in the United States, iPad has sold out at nearly all Apple Stores throughout the country; most customers must now register on a waiting list to purchase the device. However, consumer demand was not the sole factor that drove Apple’s sales figures past the one-million mark in the device’s very month. At SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, you get the feeling that iPadmay establish itself in the field of business even faster than iPhone.

Roy Anderson to Build Growth With SAP

GULFPORT, Miss. - November 05, 2007 - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced that Roy Anderson Corp (RAC), one of the premier construction firms servicing the Southeastern United States, has selected SAP’s industry-specific solution portfolio SAP® for Engineering, Construction & Operations (SAP for EC&O). RAC considered several other solutions from vendors such as Oracle and Timberline, but determined SAP was best able to meet its needs for improved management of construction projects, optimization of data integrity and support for the company’s growth plan.

RAC decided to replace its existing IT architecture, comprised of a construction management system by CGC, with a comprehensive technology platform based on SAP® solutions to address several business issues, including siloed information and integrating systems from acquired businesses. In 2006, RAC employed more than 500 full-time employees and thousands of sub-contract employees working on notable construction projects, including the Harrah’s Grand Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi and The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

“The level of visibility SAP provides across all levels of our organization is a critical driver for improving RAC’s top and bottom line,” said Bill Ponseti, CIO, RAC. “Increasing efficiencies and eliminating roadblocks for future growth – particularly in analyzing job scope and costs and automating manual reporting, HR, payroll and other process – is paramount for RAC.”

SAP and Microsoft Grow Hosted Partner Networks

SAP and Microsoft are expanding their hosted application partner networks, with Microsoft growing outside the US while SAP expands in the US.

At Microsoft's European Convergence conference, it announced several new international partners who will serve up hosted versions of the forthcoming Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 release, plus their own extensions.

The all-new CRM 4.0 (formerly known as Titan), which is due for release later this year, will be based on modern .NET architecture, plus multi-tenancy. The same code base will be used for on-premise and hosted implementations.

Microsoft is also slashing the fees it charges partners who offer hosted CRM services, from $25 per user per month to $15, which represents a 40% drop. The reduced price offers partners more scope when packaging the base CRM application with their own extensions because they can potentially offer both CRM plus extended services (back-office, vertical, or regional-specific extension) for the same price as other providers offer CRM-only services. It also helps Microsoft up the ante in the nascent SaaS application pricing/functionality war against players including Salesforce.com, NetSuite, and now SAP. Few players offer just CRM as a service.
